Orlando, FL — The University of Central Florida and its Greek community is mourning the loss of one its students, after an 18-year-old student was found unresponsive in her on-campus apartment early Thursday, August 25, 2011, reports the Orlando Sentinel.
UCF student and Delta Delta Delta new member, Ann Marie Hefferin, was found by her roommates in her on-campus residence at around 4 a.m. Upon finding her, they called 911 and began administering CPR until UCF police arrived at the scene.
Responding emergency crews rushed the freshman student to Florida Hospital East at around 4:30 a.m., where they pronounced her dead.
The cause of death is unknown at this time. The autopsy was inconclusive and additional tests have been ordered, reported Dr. Jan Garavaglia, Orange-Osceola medical examiner.
UCF police have stated that they do not think there is any threat to the campus.
While the circumstances surrounding Hefferin’s death are largely unknown and are still under investigation; KnightNews.com—a website unaffiliated with the university—reported that Hefferin attended an on-campus Sigma Chi fraternity party the night she died.
“We are thoroughly devastated by the loss of Ann Hefferin,” said Jackye Brown Clark, president of Delta Delta Delta’s national organization, in a statement. “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her family and all of our members of Beta Lambda [the UCF Tri-Delt chapter].
