Seattle, WA — A hayride accident on Shaw Island hospitalized four people and left 40 others with injuries, when the flatbed trailer overturned and spilled its passengers onto the roadway. The hayride accident occurred Sunday morning, July 24, 2011, during a weekend church retreat, reported the Sacramento Bee.

According to the San Juan Sherriff’s Office, a flatbed trailer that was transporting 50 people apart of a hayride overturned and dumped its passenger onto the road, when the trailer collided with the tractor that was pulling it. The tractor was reportedly pulling the attached trailer downhill, which caused the trailer to gain momentum and the tractor to jackknife.

Responding emergency crews airlifted four people to area hospitals for treatment of injuries, which were not considered life-threatening. Forty others also reportedly sustained “minor injuries.”

The hayride was part of a weekend retreat that was put on by at least two northwestern Washington church youth groups at Our Lady of the Rock Monastery, police stated.

Investigations into the injurious hayride accident are underway.
