Albany, NY — A vehicle rolled over several times in an SUV accident after attempting to swerve around a bail of hay on the Thruway Tuesday, June 21, 2011. One person was killed and another was injured in the wreck, which occurred on the Thruway in Minden, about 50 miles northwest of Albany at around 4:45 p.m., reported the Saratogian.
According to officials, a SUV swerved to avoid a bail of hay in the middle of the roadway, which had fallen from a vehicle. In doing so, the vehicle rolled over several times before coming to a rest against a guardrail.
A passenger in the SUV, Zane R. Ruggles, 24, of Ballston Spa, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Montgomery County coroner. Although Ruggles was wearing a seatbelt, he was partially ejected from the vehicle during the wreck.
The driver, 22-year-old Sarah Couvilion, was airlifted by helicopter to Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown for treatment of neck and back injuries. Her condition is currently unknown. Couvilion was also wearing her seatbelt.
Investigations into the rollover accident are underway.
