Denver, CO — A bicyclist was killed in what’s being called a “freak accident” with a light rail train on Sunday, June 19, 2011. The train accident occurred at the 13th and Osage crossing in Denver, reported KDVR.

According to the R.T.D., a northbound light rail train just crossed 13th, when a southbound train approached and struck the bicyclist moments later. Officials believe the cyclist was looking in the other direction, at the northbound train, when the southbound train struck the man.

“He was looking at the northbound train so when he saw the northbound train clear he started to proceed in between the crossing arms to go across the tracks and that’s when the southbound train came out of nowhere, to him, because he couldn’t see it,” said Daria Serna, R.T.D. spokesperson told KDVR.

The crossing arms were reportedly lowered at the time, and the warning lights were operational at the intersection.

It is unknown at this time if the cyclist was on his bike or walking it across the tracks at the time of the accident.

The maximum speed limit for light rail trains in that area is 35 mph.

Investigations are underway into the fatal train accident.
