Bakersfield, CA– A woman who was talking on her cell phone while crossing the street was fatally hit by a vehicle Thursday evening, June 9, 2011. The fatal pedestrian accident occurred around 1:20 p.m., near the Citizen’s Bank on California Avenue, reported Turnto23.com.

According to Bakersfield Police, the 39-year-old woman started to dial her cell phone when she walked into one of the southbound lanes of California Avenue, just west of Easton Drive.

A pickup truck reportedly slid to avoid hitting the woman, and the woman began to run into another lane to avoid being hit. In doing so, she tripped and fell into the path of a Ford Mustang driven by 44-year-old Susan Stafinbil. She was subsequently hit by the oncoming vehicle.

The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time.

Responding emergency crews reported that the woman died as a result of her injuries.

Investigations are underway.
