Bowling Green, VA — The driver of the tour bus that overturned on I-95 Tuesday morning, May 31, 2011, killing four women, has been arrested and charged with reckless driving. Police investigators have cited driver’s fatigue as the cause of the deadly bus accident, reported USA Today.
The Sky Express bus driver, Kin Yiu Cheng, 37, was charged by the Virginia State Police with reckless driving. The Associated Press reported that he is being held on a $3,000 bond.
As previously reported in “Tour Bus Overturns on I-95 in Central Virginia; 4 Killed, Several Injured,” the tour bus drove off I-95 just before dawn at 4:55 a.m., and rolled over onto its roof. The bus accident occurred on Interstate 95, about a quarter mile south of the Carmel Church exit, about 30 miles north of Richmond.
Four female passengers were killed in the wreck, and 54 others were treated at area hospitals for injuries that ranged from minor to life-threatening.
The bus was reportedly on its way to New York City from Greensboro, N.C.
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration records revealed that Sky Express holds one of the worst overall safety ratings. Sky Express has 24 “driver fitness” violations in the last two years, which were so damaging that they ordered the driver to stop driving until the problems were corrected, records stated.
In addition, Sky Express has a total of 46 federal regulation violations of how long bus drivers can stay behind the wheel.
Investigations are ongoing.
