Topeka, KS — Three people were rushed to area hospitals, after a Shawnee County Refuse truck was involved in a rear-end collision Wednesday morning, May 18, 2011. The truck accident occurred on Highway 24, reported KTKA.
Police officials reported two of the injured men were riding on the back of the truck, when a vehicle driven by 70-year-old Arnold Rueker, of Silver Lake, slammed into the rear of the garbage truck.
The garbage truck reportedly had just picked up trash, and was slowing down for another stop when the accident occurred.
Responding emergency crews transported two workers, identified as Mark Lopez and Christopher Williams, to area hospitals for treatment.
It is unknown how fast the truck was moving, but regulations mandate that if workers are riding on the back of a refuse truck, the driver should not travel faster than 10 miles per hour.
According to witnesses, the car also sideswiped an eastbound van and another vehicle drove off the road to avoid being involved in the accident.
Investigations are underway.
