Lakeland, FL — A 14-year-old girl lost part of her leg in a personal watercraft accident on Lake Gibson Sunday, April 24, 2011. The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m., while the teen and another girl were riding side-by-side on a pair of Waverunners, reported Bay News 9.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation (FWC) officials, reported that the two teenage girls, ages 14 and 15, were riding side-by-side on jet skis about 150 yards from shore when one of the teens suddenly turned.

“The person who was to the right turned to the left and the other personal watercraft rode right up over on to the seat. The young lady who lost her leg unfortunately caused the accident and there was nothing that the other young lady could do to avoid it,” FWC Commission Spokesman Gary Morse said to Bay News 9.

The 14-year-old girl severed her leg below the knee in the accident.

Florida state laws permit anyone over the age of 14 to operate a personal watercraft if they’ve completed a state sponsored boater safety course. FWC officials reported that neither teen had completed the mandatory safety course.

Investigations are underway.
