Stark County, OH — A Canton Drop Forge employee was killed in an apparent industrial accident on Friday, April 22, 2011. The fatal workplace accident occurred at 4575 Southway St. SW, just after midnight, reported the Canton Rep.

According to officials, 31-year-old Shawn Dixon was trying to move a pallet from a machine, which uses high pressure blasting to remove imperfections from forgings, when a cable snapped. This caused a hopper to pivot backward at a high rate of speed, throwing Dixon into a metal structure where he fell into a walkway, reported a Stark County Coroner’s Office spokeswoman.

The machinery was not in use at the time of the accident.

Responding emergency crews rushed Dixon to Aultman Hospital, where was pronounced dead at 12:34 a.m.

“It’s likely that he died instantaneously from his injuries,” said Harry Campbell, Coroner’s Office investigator told the Canton Rep.

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) are conducting an investigation into the industrial accident.
