Staten Island, NY – (New York City Personal Injury Attorney News) On Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at approximately 12:00 p.m., a New York City fire truck struck a van carrying a group of disabled adults in Staten Island, resulting in the death of one passenger and serious injuries to two other passengers, as reported by The New York Times. Police and fire officials reported that the accident occurred at the intersection of Richmond Road and Burgher Avenue.

The death and injuries occurred when a fire truck from Ladder 81, traveling north on Richmond Road collided with the silver van, which was headed west on Burgher Avenue. The van was struck along its driver’s side. The truck was responding to reports of a car on fire with people trapped inside of the vehicle. The truck was traveling with lights and sirens activated, according to authorities.

James Long, a Fire Department spokesman, reported that contributing factors to the crash were not clear, as of March 9. The police did not report whether any summonses or citations were issued after the crash. The van was operated by Lifestyles for the Disabled.

New York City officials reported that the three adult male passengers who were in the van and the most seriously injured were taken to Staten Island University Hospital North. After arrival, one of the three men, Eric Perry, 51, was pronounced dead. The surviving passengers were reportedly in critical and stable condition.

Long also stated that six other passengers who were in the van suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital. The passengers’ ages ranged from 20 to 51 years old. It was also reported that six firefighters suffered injuries from the crash as well, and were taken to the hospital.
