Brentwood, NY — A worker was crushed to death at a Brentwood recycling plant on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, spurring an investigating by Long Island officials. The fatal workplace accident occurred at Emjay Environmental Recycling in Brentwood, reported the Wall Street Journal.

Details surrounding the accident are limited, but officials identified the fatally injured man as 44-year-old Augustin Colon, of Westbury.

Colon was reportedly under a debris sorting conveyor at the recycling plant when his arm apparently became caught in the belt and was subsequently trapped in a piece of heavy machinery.

Colon was last seen by a co-worker just after 1 p.m., and wasn’t found until about 4:30 p.m.

Responding emergency crews pronounced Colon dead at the scene.

The Town of Islip Fire Marshal’s Office and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the fatal workplace accident.
