Monroe, MI — A small plane crashed nose-first into a Monroe city park, just 100 feet from a playscape where children were playing on Tuesday afternoon, March 29, 2011. Three people were killed in the aviation accident, which occurred at around 4:04 p.m. at Munson Park, reported the Detroit Times.
According to officials, the Piper Malibu Mirage took off from a Bedford County, Pa. airport at around 2:26 p.m., and was scheduled to arrived at the Custer Airport at about 4 p.m. The plane was apparently heading south when it skirted some trees, before nose-diving into at a soccer field at Munson Park.
Police reported that there were some people on or near the soccer field at the time of accident, but no one of the ground was apparently injured.
The three people aboard the plane were killed in the crash.
The plane is registered to Triple F Aviation LLC of Monroe.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the fatal plane crash.
