San Francisco, CA (San Francisco Bus Crash Attorney News)—Twenty-three people were injured and one person was killed when a Korean church bus lost control and hit another vehicle, before careening down an embankment along Highway 189. The fatal accident occurred around 11:50 a.m. Monday, February 21, 2011, as the bus was on its way to Pasadena from a weekend retreat in Twin Lakes, reported Fox News and the Los Angeles Times.
The church bus from the Light of Love Mission Church was transporting mostly middle-school or high-school aged members of the congregation when the driver, Won Seok Chae, 61, lost control and crossed the center line. The bus hit a Nissan Murano and sheered off a telephone pole, before it slid down a 20-foot embankment and slammed head-on into a tree.
The bus driver, Chae, was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency crews. Many of the victims were trapped in the wreckage until emergency crews could extricate them. The rescue effort took about an hour, and triage was set up nearby. Twenty-three others were injured, with 10 sustaining critical injuries. The victims were rushed to Loma Linda Medical Center and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for medical treatment of their injuries. There were reportedly 22 people on the bus and two in the other vehicle at the time of the crash.
Chae is apparently a professional driver who volunteered to make the trip with the congregation.
The CHP said the highway was wet, but not icy at the time of the wreck. It is unknown how fast the bus was traveling when it lost control and hit the SUV.
Investigations into the wreck are underway by CHP accident investigators.
