Los Angeles, CA—Star magazine is facing a $50 million libel lawsuit from Katie Holmes, after the tabloid magazine published a cover suggesting the former “Dawson’s Creek” star was a drug addict.

TMZ reported that Star Magazine’s January cover had a photo of an exhausted-looking Holmes with the headline “ADDICTION NIGHTMARE—Katie DRUG SHOCKER!—The Real Reason She Can’t Leave Tom.”

But, the accompanying article did not actually claim that Holmes, 32, was addicted to drugs; instead the magazine suggested the wife of superstar Tom Cruise had attended Scientology session where an “e-meter” measured her electrical resistance, which allegedly reflects past emotional experiences.

This isn’t the first time Star magazine focused on Holmes’ personal life. In October, the tabloid claimed their marriage contract had collapsed and the couple was fighting over custody of Suri, their 4-year-old daughter. Then in December, the magazine claimed she was ‘fed-up’ with her marriage to Cruise, 48, and had separated from him.

“Star Magazine’s malicious claims about Katie are untrue, unethical and unlawful. Not only do they cruelly defame Katie, they play a cheap trick on the public, making ridiculously false claims on the cover unsupported by anything inside,” a rep for Holmes told TMZ.

The lawsuit is seeking $50 million in damages from American Media Inc., the parent company of Star magazine.
