Brooklyn, NY (New York City Injury Lawyer News) — A livery driver was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, reckless driving and imprudent speed in connection with the Brooklyn traffic crash that resulted in the hospitalization of a Baltimore mother and her infant twins. The injurious accident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 2, 2010, happened in the Sunset Park neighborhood, just before the mother and her 9-month-old sons were about to return to Maryland. According to information provided by the New York Times, the livery cab driver was driving on a suspended license when he ran a red light, causing a violent chain-reaction wreck and leaving one of the young twins in critical condition.

Reports stated 57-year-old Gregorio A. Patino was behind the wheel of a livery cab and was driving through Brooklyn when he failed to stop at a red traffic light on Fourth Avenue between 44th and 45th streets. The cab then slammed into the back of a Toyota minivan, propelling it into a Toyota pickup truck. The pickup truck then careened into the mother and her babies, who were in a stroller at the time. Guillermo Tapia, 34, identified the mother as his friend, Patricia. She was apparently about to get picked up by the driver of the pickup truck, a family member, when it struck her and her children. “She was out the door waiting for her family… It was the family’s truck that hit her,” said Mr. Tapia.

A witness at the scene, Evan Lebron, contended the accident happened so fast, “she didn’t even get a chance to scream.” Patricia and her twin sons were rushed to Lutheran Medical Center. While the extent of the victims’ injuries was not immediately known, one of the infants allegedly suffered critical injuries in the Brooklyn traffic crash. Lebron, who works for a livery service near the accident scene and knew Patino, claimed the livery driver tried to avoid a collision with the minivan, but to no avail.
