Belle Rose, LA—A Gonzales woman was run over by the tow truck that was pulling her wrecked vehicle from a ditch Tuesday night, Dec. 28, 2010. The victim, who was airlifted to a Baton Rouge-area hospital after the accident, suffered critical injuries, according to information provided by WAFB.
Reports indicated 42-year-old Barrie Hebert was driving a 2006 Nissan Maxima when she failed to negotiate a curve along LA 70 South, west of Douglas road. Herbert’s car subsequently careened off the roadway and became partly submerged in a drainage ditch.
The Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office was notified of the crash, and officers responded to the scene, along with a tow truck. It did not appear as if the motorist sustained any injuries in the first accident.
Hebert reportedly inquired as to whether her cell phone was in her car as it was being towed. Police and the tow truck driver apparently told her that if it was indeed inside the vehicle, she could retrieve it once it was on the wrecker.
Authorities seem to believe Hebert then walked into the ditch after speaking with officials, possibly to look for her cell phone, when the tow truck ran her over.
Hebert was flown to an undisclosed Baton Rouge hospital in critical condition.
While no citations were issued after the accident, a full investigation was expected to be underway.
