Los Angeles County, CA (California Injury Lawyer News)—Two people lost their lives and several others suffered critical injuries in a violent wreck along California Highway 138 Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010. The head-on collision, which involved a sport utility vehicle and box truck, occurred in close proximity to Gorman, Calif. According to information provided by the Los Angeles Times, a dozen inmates from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation were riding in the truck at the time. The inmates, who are supervised by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, reportedly “augment hand crews from four other camps staffed by county firefighters who cut fire breaks to prevent or battle brush fires.”

A preliminary probe into the LA County crash seemed to indicate that the driver of a Subaru Forester SUV swerved across State Route 138 and into the path of an oncoming box truck around 2:20 p.m. Upon doing so, the SUV slammed head-on into the truck, causing it to roll approximately 150 feet. Several inmates were apparently thrown from the truck during the rollover accident. “Some of the members were ejected, and some were trapped inside,” explained Fire Inspector Matt Levesque. Rescue personnel made use of hydraulic rescue tools to free the trapped inmates from the damaged truck.

While emergency medical services (EMS) crews responded to S.R. 138 to aid those injured in the SUV-truck collision, the driver of the Subaru and one of the inmates succumbed to their injuries at the scene. California Highway Patrol Trooper John Lutz alleged the Subaru driver was 75 to 85 years old. The remaining injured victims, including some who suffered life-threatening injuries, were rushed to area hospitals for treatment. Officials are withholding the victims’ identities, likely pending the notification of family members. Investigators have not yet determined a definite cause. A full probe was expected to be underway.
