Avon Park, FL—At least three people, including a 3-year-old boy, suffered injuries in a motor vehicle collision along U.S. Route 27 Saturday morning, Dec. 18, 2010. The two-vehicle accident occurred between Lake Byrd Boulevard and Stratford Road, just north of Avon Park, as reported by Highlands Today.
A pickup truck was heading northbound on U.S. 27 when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to careen through the median and into oncoming traffic. The pickup then smashed into a southbound Ford minivan, Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Paul Miller explained.
Given that it was raining when the accident occurred, slick roadways might have contributed to the wreck. Nevertheless, a full investigation will be required to confirm such speculations.
According to Miller, three people in the Ford van were hurt in the U.S. 27 collision.
One passenger, who remained completely unidentified, suffered critical injuries and was rushed to Florida Hospital Heartland Division for treatment.
Another passenger was taken to Highlands Regional Medical Center and then transferred to Tampa General Hospital. The extent of that victim’s injuries, along with their identity, was not immediately known.
A young boy who was riding in the minivan also suffered injuries and was transported to Florida Hospital. The child was eventually transferred to St. Petersburg-based All Children’s Hospital to be treated for unspecified wounds.
It was not clear if anyone inside the pickup truck sustained any injuries.
FHP officials are expected to investigate the U.S. 27 automobile accident.
