Washington—Twelve people were rushed to the hospital after a coal truck sideswiped a school bus on Tuesday, November 9, 2010. The school bus crash occurred on SR 57 at 3:47 p.m., as the bus was attempting to stop and let children off the bus just south of CR450S, as reported by the Washington Times-Herald.
Officials reported the Washington Community Schools bus No. 7 was traveling south at 3:47 p.m., when it flipped on its caution lights, warning other motorists that the bus was about to stop.
A vehicle in front of a semi truck began to stop for the school bus, when the semi’s braked locked up, causing the big rig to sideswipe the bus, and jackknife. The semi came to a stop facing south, blocking all three lanes of traffic.
About 15 to 20 students were on the bus when the accident occurred. Ten children, the driver of the semi and the school bus driver were transported to Daviess Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. By 6 p.m. that day, all but one student who was still undergoing medical evaluations were released.
The semi-truck driver was identified as Alecia Sedam, 35 of Jasper. The school bus driver was identified as Barbara White-Riker, 56, of Washington.
School officials, volunteer firefighters, Daviess County Sheriff’s deputies and Southwest Medical EMTs responded to the scene.
