Holt, MO—A school bus accident Thursday morning, November 4, 2010, sent at least 12 students, all of whom were middle-school age and up, to hospitals. The bus crash happened along Missouri Route 33, in close proximity to Highway CC, according to information provided by KMBC.
Reports indicated a Kearney School District bus was traveling along Route 33 when it crashed in a ditch, hitting a tree as well. The frame underneath the passenger compartment was allegedly torn away on impact.
Emergency medical services (EMS) crews were dispatched to the scene of the crash and transported at least seven students to area hospitals via ambulance.
Five additional students suffered injuries and were taken to the hospitals by their parents. Injuries sustained in the bus wreck did not appear to be life threatening. There were 23 students on the bus at the time.
The driver of the bus, who remained unidentified, was also rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
It was not yet known what caused the school bus to veer off the roadway and wreck in the ditch. Nonetheless, the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) is expected to conduct a full investigation.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia, there were 116 school buses involved in fatal crashes in the U.S. during the year 2008. Data indicated those accidents resulted in a total of 152 fatalities.
