Schaumburg, IL—A Chicago man was killed when his small plane crashed in Schaumberg, located about 30 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, on the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 1. The 66-year-old pilot was the only person aboard the aircraft when it went down just 10 feet from the runway at Schaumburg International Airport around 3:30 p.m., according to information provided by the Chicago Sun-Times.
Reports indicated William Borgstrom was piloting a two-seat, single-engine Luscombe plane when it began to veer to the south just moments after beginning to gain altitude. The aircraft then crashed nose first into the ground, about 10 feet from the runway.
Emergency personnel rushed Borgstrom to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village. Sadly, he succumbed to his traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:07 p.m.
While Illinois State Police and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials were notified of the plane crash, the National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating, given that there was a fatality reported.
According to NSTB data, there were 1,474 general aviation accidents reported in the U.S. during the year 2009. Of those, 272 were described as fatal, resulting in a total of 474 casualties.
A full probe into the deadly Schaumberg plane crash is expected to be underway.
