New York, NY (NY Injury Lawyer News)—A violent two-vehicle collision Monday, October 25, 2010, left nine people injured. The accident, which involved a sport utility vehicle and a transport van, occurred in Staten Island’s Great Kills neighborhood around 4 p.m. All nine crash victims were rushed to Staten Island University North Hospital with serious or critical injuries. The Staten Island Advance also reported the van was occupied by handicapped adults, who were being transported from a group home at the time. While a full investigation is underway, a preliminary probe into the injurious crash seemed to indicate the driver of the SUV ran a stop sign before crashing into the transport van, as reported by CBS New York.

According to eyewitnesses at the scene, a SUV was traveling along Genesee Avenue, near Abingdon Avenue, when the driver failed to stop at a stop sign. Upon doing so, the SUV smashed into the side of a transport van, propelling both vehicles into two trees. The van then went on to slam into a utility pole. Joe Brandi, a resident of Great Kills, alleged it was the second wreck to occur at that intersection that day. Brandi noted there is only one stop sign for the two-way streets at that dangerous junction. “When I got here, I saw people laying [on the street]. They were all in neck braces,” said Mike Lakow. Investigations continue.

Data published in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia indicated that out of 34,172 fatal accidents in the United States during the year 2008, 1,174 occurred in New York. A total of 1,238 lives were lost in those motor vehicle accidents. In New York City alone, there were 58 traffic fatalities reported during that year.
