Broward County, FL—A 17-year-old girl is listed in critical condition after a car struck her outside of Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches Wednesday, October 20, 2010. While a younger male suffered a minor wrist injury in the accident, the girl’s leg was severed on impact, according to information provided by the Miami Herald.

Reports indicated an unidentified 17-year-old female had just finished giving a group of elementary students a tour of Archbishop McCarthy High School and was returning to the building around 1:45 p.m., when the unthinkable occurred.

A 71-year-old woman allegedly drove her Toyota Corolla up on a curb, consequently slamming into the teenager. The vehicle hit a post as well.

According to authorities from the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the girl was airlifted to Memorial Regional Hospital via medical helicopter. She was listed in critical condition.

BSO spokesman Mike Jachles stated, “It’s very tragic, and hopefully this girl will pull through.”

The traumatized driver, whose identity was also withheld, was transported to Memorial Regional as a safety precaution.

Reports did not specify whether any charges have been filed in connection with the injurious Broward County traffic accident. Nonetheless, investigations are expected to be underway.
