Chicago, IL—A van struck two pedestrians early Monday, October 25, 2010, killing one of them and leaving the other with undisclosed injuries. While the driver initially fled the scene of the North Aurora crash, he turned himself in to police a few hours later, according to information provided by the Beacon-News.
Reports indicated 22-year-old Doreen L. Cardenas, of Cicero, was standing outside her parked car with 22-year-old Pedro A. Navarro, of North Aurora, when a southbound van clipped Cardenas’ car and struck them.
The driver of the van, later identified as 30-year-old Lee Roy Patters, subsequently sped away from the crash scene. A witness apparently discovered Cardenas and Navarro lying on the pavement at 42 S. Grant.
Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel were dispatched to the scene and rushed the injured pedestrians to Provena-Mercy Center Hospital for treatment. Sadly, Cardenas’ injuries proved fatal at 2:35 p.m. Navarro remained hospitalized with unspecified injuries.
Patters turned himself in to the North Aurora Police Department at 5:01 a.m. The hit-and-run driver was detained, though no charges have been filed as of yet.
North Aurora police, with assistance from the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team, are conducting a full probe into the fatal traffic accident.
All witnesses or individuals with information concerning the accident are urged to contact traffic investigator Dan Cyko at 6300-897-8705.
