San Gabriel, CA– The mayor of San Gabriel has stepped down following his arrest for a purse-snatching incident where he took off in his SUV, with a woman clinging to the side of his vehicle. The arrest occurred on Friday, October 15, 2010 at around 1:15 a.m., after someone reported a heated fight between the mayor and a woman over money, as reported by KTLA.

Albert Y.M. Huang announced his resignation on Tuesday, October 19, over the intense media storm that has surrounded him since the incident; but he is confident his reputation will be restored.

According to police officials, on the night of the arrest, Huang and a 35-year-old woman were arguing outside a restaurant in the 200 block of West Valley Boulevard about money. The woman claimed Huang then grabbed her purse, which held her car keys, money and personal items and got into her vehicle. The woman then reached into her car window, in an attempt to prevent Huang from leaving with her purse. The unidentified woman claimed Huang then pushed her, got out of her car and into his SUV, all while the woman was still standing on the vehicle’s running boards.

Huang then took off, while the woman was clinging to the SUV’s mirror for about a quarter mile down a residential road, as the vehicle reached speeds as high as 45 miles per hour. A security guard reportedly saw the horrifying incident, and got Huang to stop the SUV. The security guard held Huang until police officials arrived.

The woman was uninjured.

Huang was arrested on suspicion of felony robbery, suspicion of assault by means to produce great bodily injury. Huang’s bail was set at $100,000.

Huang subsequently released a statement, which read:

“As a public official and a former Boy Scout, I hold myself to the highest standard of conduct. On last night’s incident, it was a great misunderstanding between friends. As a result I am confident I will restore my innocence in court.”
