Livingston County, MI—A tragic Green Oak Township crossover crash resulted in five traffic fatalities and left four others, including three children, with serious or potentially life threatening injuries. The two-vehicle accident occurred along U.S. 23 between Lee Road and Silver Lake Road, as reported by Click on Detroit.
Green Oak Twp. Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Gentry reported an unidentified motorist was driving his/her Toyota Prius along U.S. 23 when the vehicle veered over the centerline and into oncoming traffic.
The Toyota slammed into a Chevy Blazer head-on, ejecting three people on impact. The six remaining victims had to be extracted from the two wrecked vehicles.
Five people lost their lives in the violent head-on collision. Though the victims’ identities have not been released as of yet, both drivers, along with three others, ages 18, 19 and 56, were killed.
Three children, ages 3, 5 and 10, as well as an 18-year-old, were hospitalized for their injuries. While the children were apparently listed in serious condition, the 18-year-old was reportedly being treated for critical injuries.
Nearby resident Betty Max allegedly heard the crash, stating, “I heard the breaks squealing… then, you just hear ‘bam’ and see this car just rolling through the air… It was just awful.”
According to Green Oak Twp. Police Chief Robert Brookings, “We just have some significant impact to both vehicles. It’s too early to determine exactly what transpired… At one point there was a potential fire, the vehicle was extinguished on the site.”
A full investigation is expected to be underway.
