Enterprise, AL—A worker was killed just a week away from his 48th birthday, when a ditch he was digging caved in, covering the man with dirt from his shoulders down. The construction accident occurred around 2:30 p.m., behind the Enterprise State Junior College on Thursday, September 23, 2010.

According to Enterprise police officials, Ray Anthony Blackmon, 47, was working with a crew who were digging a ditch for a sewer line. When the ditch reached about 8 feet deep, it collapsed on Blackmon and another worker. The dirt reportedly covered Blackmon from his shoulders down.

Blackmon and the other worker, Michael Wald, were rushed to Enterprise Medical Center for treatment.

Sadly, at about 9:30 p.m., Blackmon was pronounced dead while in the intensive care unit at Enterprise Medical Center. He reportedly sustained internal injures and 16 broken ribs.

L & K Contracting, a Dothan-based company, apparently employs the workers.

Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are reportedly investigating the trench collapse.

Blackmon’s children reportedly had just completed their plan’s for their father’s surprise birthday party, set for next Wednesday. Blackmon has five children.
