Silver Spring, MD—Twenty-six people were hospitalized after a bus collision occurred at a bus stop in Silver Spring Thursday morning, September 30, 2010. The Montgomery County accident, which happened at University Boulevard and Brunette Street, involved two Metro transit buses, according to information provided by the Gazette.net.
Montgomery County police spokesman Capt. Paul Starks reported a Metro bus failed to stop in enough time to avoid striking the back of another Metro bus around 7:07 a.m. A total of 26 people, including eight Montgomery Blair High School students, suffered injuries in the Metro bus collision.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service Assistant Chief Scott Graham alleged that while 19 of the bus accident victims’ sustained minor injuries, seven others suffered more serious injuries. Nonetheless, their injuries were also deemed to be non-life threatening.
Montgomery Blair High School administrative secretary Claudine Biggs stated the eight students aboard the bus at the time were transported to Holy Cross and Washington Adventist hospitals to be treated for their minor injuries.
Additionally, Montgomery County police issued the unidentified driver of the striking Metro bus a summons for “failing to control the speed of the vehicle.
Police spokesman Capt. Paul Starks added, “No one is saying the man was speeding… We’re saying the man didn’t stop in time.”
Metro Transit Police and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority are conducting a full probe into the injurious bus crash, according to WMATA spokesman Steven Taubenkibel.
