Santa Ana, CA—Police arrested a driver on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) after the motorist reportedly drove his sport utility vehicle into nine people, dragging two victims about 50 feet, in Santa Ana. The accident occurred around 7:45 p.m. Monday night, September 8, 2010 and left five people, including two children, with injuries ranging from non-life threatening to critical. The driver, identified as 34-year-old Miguel Angel Sandoval, was being held at the Santa Ana City Jail after the injurious pedestrian-involved traffic crash, according to information provided by the Orange County Register.
Reports indicated Sandoval was driving his 1998 Chevy Suburban westbound on McFadden Avenue when the SUV reportedly veered across several lanes before jumping a curb. Sandoval’s SUV then careened onto the sidewalk, hitting a mother and daughter who were traveling along the 1300 block of West McFadden Ave. by foot. Sandoval’s SUV reportedly dragged the woman and her 2-year-old daughter 50 feet, all the while striking seven additional pedestrians. Witnesses on the scene reportedly helped the mother and her young daughter escape from beneath the wrecked vehicle. The driver, who was believed to have been intoxicated at the time, did not sustain any injuries in the traffic accident.
Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel rushed the 2-year-old girl and her mother to an area hospital to be treated for their injuries. The mother suffered a fractured leg while her daughter was reportedly listed in stable but critical condition with unspecified injuries. Reports stated another 2-year-old girl was also rushed to the hospital after becoming involved in the collision. That particular child underwent surgery for her severe injuries. Two additional adults also sustained injuries, which were described as non-life threatening. Charges are pending a full probe into the pedestrian-involved Santa Ana crash.
