Bishop, CA—A fiery automobile crash along U.S. Highway 395 killed at least six people, and injured 12 others when a SUV lost control and slammed into a van that was carrying athletes from California Baptist University in Riverside. The fatal crash occurred in the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 395 around 8 p.m., reports the Los Angeles Times.

According to authorities, the van was traveling northbound on the highway, just about five miles south of Bishop, as part of a caravan with two other university vehicles. A southbound Ford SUV then suddenly lost control and slammed into the van. The impact of the crash caused the SUV to burst into flames. A second van that was traveling in the caravan managed to avoid the collision. But, a third vehicle, which was not a apart of the caravan, hit the SUV.

Five people inside the SUV were killed in the wreck. One person was also killed inside the van. Twelve others reportedly sustained injuries as well.

The van was reportedly transporting members of the cross-country team at California Baptist University.

Police officials are still investigating the fatal crash. The victim’s identities and other details are currently being withheld.
