Stockton, CA—Five people were rushed to the hospital with first- and second-degree burns after the boat they were on burst into flames. The boat was at the Bullfrog Marina when it caught fire for unknown reasons around 2:45 p.m. in San Joaquin County, reports KCRA.
Responding emergency crews transported four women and one man with first- and second-degree burns to area hospitals for treatment. The victims were reportedly treated and released.
The identities of the victims are currently being withheld.
According to witnesses, the boaters just finished refueling the tank when there was a loud blast just seconds after starting the engine. The screams of the victims could be heard as they bailed from the boat and into the water.
Police officials believe that the fumes probably built up within the engine compartment of the watercraft and somehow ignited.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the exact cause of the fire.
