Cincinnati, OH—The Procter & Gamble Co. (P&G), in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), voluntarily recalled one-liter bottles of Scope® Original Mint Mouthwash. The CPSC announced the recall, which affects approximately 35,000 units, on Friday, June 25, 2010.

The product safety recall was issued after it was discovered that certain bottles of Scope® Original Mint Mouthwash may have defective child-resistant caps. Certain bottles may also reportedly lack the statement, “This Package for Households Without Young Children,” which is required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA).

Given that Scope® Original Mint Mouthwash contains ethyl alcohol, children who accidentally ingest the product run the risk of suffering severe or potentially life-threatening injuries. No injuries or adverse events have been reported to the manufacturer as of yet.

According to the CPSC, “This recall involves some bottles of Scope® Original Mint Mouthwash in 1 liter sizes. The recalled bottles have the number 4 on the bottom of the bottle. The bottles with the 4 on the bottom may not be child-resistant. Consumers can also attempt to twist the cap open. If the cap can be twisted off without squeezing the tabs on the cap, the package is not child-resistant.”

Scope® Original Mint Mouthwash was made available for purchase at drug and grocery stores, as well as other miscellaneous retailers, between January 2010 and June 2010. The mouthwash was valued at about $4.

Consumers have been urged to stow the mouthwash far from children. Also, those who purchased the mouthwash “with the expectation that it would be in child-resistant packaging” may contact the manufacturer to receive a full reimbursement or replacement coupon. Adults living in households without children may continue to use the product.

Procter & Gamble can be reached toll-free at (877) 340-8825 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, or online at www.scopemouthwash.com.
