West Palm Beach, FL—A motor vehicle collision (MVC) involving a Palm Tran bus and an SUV left 11 people injured, five of whom were hospitalized, after the accident. The wreck occurred in West Palm Beach around 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon, July 15, 2010, according to information provided by the Palm Beach Post and WPBF.
While details as to how the crash might have occurred were scarce, reports indicated a Palm Tran bus and Ford Escape sport utility vehicle became involved in a violent afternoon wreck.
The transit bus crash occurred at the intersection of Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard and Executive Center Drive.
The impact apparently trapped three unidentified kids inside the SUV. Emergency crews were seemingly forced to use hydraulic rescue tools to extricate the children from the damaged SUV.
West Palm Beach Fire Rescue battalion Chief Kevin Lewis reported five people, including three children, were rushed to area hospitals for treatment.
The three youngsters were apparently being treated for their unspecified injuries in the pediatric unit of St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Six others suffered injuries but were likely treated at the scene, or refused medical attention altogether.
Statistics provided by the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia, created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), indicated there were 247 fatal bus crashes in 2008.
Of those accidents, 92 involved transit buses specifically.
Additionally, there were 198 traffic fatalities reported in Palm Beach County alone during that year.
Investigations into Thursday’s bus-SUV collision are expected to be underway.
