Modesto, CA—A chain reaction collision, involving three semi-trucks on Highway 99 left one man dead. The fatal crash occurred shortly before midnight along Highway 99, just south of Lander Avenue, as reported by The Sacramento Bee.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that semi-truck driver Marcus Trask, 41, of Selma was driving a 2004 Sterling 18-wheeler and trailer south on Highway 99, when he had stopped in the west shoulder and tried to merge back into traffic. Another 18-wheeler driver, identified as Jaime Henriquez, 56, of Fresno, slowed the 2005 Freightliner and trailer he was driving to let Trask reenter the highway. A third tractor-trailer driver apparently did not see what was going on with the two other semis, and subsequently rear-ended Henriquez’s semi.
The impact of the collision pushed the second semi into the back of the first 18-wheeler, which also crushed the third big rig’s cab 15 feet inward. The third semi erupted into a fireball, which spread to the trailer, Henriquez’s rig and to the grass on the shoulder of the highway.
The collision killed one of the drivers, but it was not reported which driver was killed in the wreck. The two other drivers said they would seek their own medical treatment. The extent of their injuries was unclear at the time. All three drivers were reportedly wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
A full investigation is underway.
