Long Beach, CA—A collision between a Long Beach police officer’s patrol car and Blue Line train injured the officer and several passengers from the train on Wednesday, July 7, 2010. The accident occurred at 1:15 p.m. near the Pacific Coast Highway and Long Beach Avenue, as reported by the Contra Costa Times.

Long Beach police officials said the unidentified officer was driving west on 16th Street when it collided with the Blue Line train. Authorities are unsure if the officer was responding to an emergency call or the officer simply ran the red light at the time of the accident.

The train dragged the black-and-white patrol car dozens of feet before coming to a complete stop.

Responding emergency rescue teams had to cut the officer out of his heavily damaged patrol car with the “Jaws of Life” before transporting the officer to the Long Beach Memorial Center for treatment of his injuries. Authorities say the officer is currently in stable condition.

Several train passengers complained of neck and back pain before being taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Officials from the Long Beach Police, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Blue Line’s operator, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority all responded to the scene of the accident.

A full investigation in underway.
