New York City Accident Lawyer News – Harlem, NY—One person was killed and four others were injured after a minivan tried to elude police on Tuesday morning, June 22, 2010 in Harlem, New York. The van was reportedly traveling at an excessively high rate of speed when it lost control, slamming into a vehicle, two pedestrians, and a bicyclist. The unfortunate traffic accident occurred after the evading vehicle ran a red light and careened into the intersection of Lenox Avenue and West 122nd Street. While police officials alleged they did not chase the van during the 9:30 a.m. incident, witnesses have claimed otherwise, according to information provided by All Headline News.

Reports indicated an unidentified driver was pulled over on West 141st Street, in relation to a robbery that had taken place minutes prior to the traffic stop. However, after the driver exited the vehicle to speak with police officers, a passenger in the van took the initiative to replace him as the driver. In an abrupt attempt to escape, the unidentified passenger stepped on the gas pedal and fled the scene. Police claim they did not attempt to apprehend the suspects, seemingly due to the danger associated with high-speed chases.

However, witnesses contended the black undercover cop car followed the van as it sped southbound towards the junction. The minivan subsequently failed to stop at a stop sign and smashed into an occupied silver vehicle. The van also struck two elderly pedestrians and a cyclist before coming to a rest in the intersection. The suspects who were occupying the minivan then fled the scene on foot. While police officials managed to arrest one of the perpetrators, the other could not be located.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel rushed five individuals, two of whom were listed in critical condition, to area hospitals for treatment after the traffic wreck. The two pedestrians and bicyclist were taken to Harlem Hospital where one woman’s traumatic injuries proved fatal upon her arrival. Two people who were occupying the silver car, a 55-year-old woman and 6-year-old boy, were transported to St. Luke’s medical center. They were both listed in stable condition. Investigations into the deadly accident continue.
