Ruidoso, NM—Five people were killed and two others were critically injured when a plane crashed as it attempted to land at Sierra Blanca Regional Airport on Thursday, June 17, 2010. The tragic aviation accident occurred near Ruidoso in south-central New Mexico, as reported by KFOXTV.com.
Rodney Duree was piloting a six-seat twin-engine Cessna 310 when it crashed in close proximity to the regional airport. According to New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Lt. Eric Garcia, “The pilot came in too low, too close to the airport and subsequently dropped at a quick speed, subsequently crashing and killing give passengers aboard.”
Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel rushed to the scene after the wreck. However, only two of the seven passengers aboard the plane managed to survive the horrific aircraft accident.
Pilot Rodney Duree, Delanie Duree (Rodney’s wife), 11-year-old Lake Duree (their son), Karl Richey, and Kaeri Richey (Karl’s wife) succumbed to their traumatic injuries at the scene.
Christopher Richey, 12, as well as 16-year-old Alexander Richey, suffered critical injuries in the plane crash. They were flown to University Medical Center via emergency helicopter to be treated by doctors and nurses.
The wrecked plane was registered to Texas-based Rod Aviation.
Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to conduct a full investigation into the deadly aviation accident.
