Lakeland, FL (Lakeland Auto Accident Lawyer — News)—Four people were rushed to the hospital after a drunk driver, who was on his way to purchase more alcohol, caused a five-vehicle crash along U.S. 98 North in Lakeland. Police officials responded to the crash at about 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, just north of Carpenter’s Way, as reported by The Ledger.
Lakeland police officials stated Matthew Allen Lane, 33, of Lakeland, was driving a black Ford car when he swerved from the far left lane to the right lane of U.S. 98, where a few cars were stopped at a red traffic light. The Ford subsequently slammed into a Chevrolet minivan, which caused it to spin uncontrollably. As a result, three female passengers in the minivan were ejected from the vehicle.
The Ford then hit a Dodge Charger, which then struck a Honda Elementdriven by Evenlyn Winrow, 68, of Lakeland. The impact caused the Honda to rear-end a Buick SUV, driven by Donald Stein, 49.
Officials reported that neither Winrow nor Stein was injured in the wreck.
Lane reportedly told witnesses at the scene that he had been drinking and he was on his way to buy more alcohol when the accident occurred. Lane’s Ford was also seen driving erratically just minutes before the wreck, according to witnesses.
Responding emergency medical crews rushed Lane to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where he was listed in serious condition. The three woman who were ejected from the minivan were also taken to Lakeland Regional for treatment for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
Lakeland police are conducting a full investigation into the multiple-vehicle crash. They are currently trying to determine whether Lane will face charges for driving under the influence and reckless driving.
