Phoenix, AZ—Four people were killed when the small plane they were occupying unexpectedly crashed into a vacant high school building. The bodies were found Saturday, June 12, 2010, one day after the aviation accident occurred in Apache County, Arizona, as reported by USA Today.
According to information provided, a single-engine Piper aircraft circled an area in the town of Eagar several times prior to the crash. At approximately 2 p.m., the small plane went down. It apparently smashed through the main building at Round Valley High School. The aircraft exploded and burst into flames on impact.
Fire rescue teams from about 12 towns in the vicinity subsequently rushed to the scene to battle the blaze. Flames continued to shoot up nearly 20 feet two hours after the crash occurred.
Firefighters even remained at the scene overnight in an attempt to completely extinguish the fire, which was contained to the main building of the school.
Authorities also evacuated residents living in neighborhoods east and north of the high school. There were no injuries reported in the school or its surrounding area.
Sadly, four people were aboard the airplane when it was downed. According to Apache County sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Guinn, the plane crash victims have yet to be indentified. It was also unknown whether any children were occupying the aircraft at the time.
Eagar is located in Apache County, approximately 200 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona.
Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to conduct a full investigation into the fatal aviation accident.
