Chicago, IL—A workplace accident at Bulk Transport’s yard left a Michigan City man dead when a forklift he was working on fell over on him. The fatal accident occurred Tuesday morning, June 8, 2010 at ArcelorMittal in Burns Harbor, around 11:15 a.m., as reported by NWI Times.
Officials reported Mark R. Cripe, 57, who works as a mechanic for Bulk Transport, was working on a forklift that was raised by a loader so that it could be serviced. The heavy piece of machinery then fell on him for unknown reasons. Cripe was working alone at the time.
A Matco Tools worker found Cripe underneath the forklift and immediately pulled him out.
The injured mechanic had no visible injuries, but he did have a history of heart problems, leading officials to believe he possibly died from cardiac problems. But an autopsy conducted on Wednesday, revealed that he died of blunt force trauma to the chest.
Investigators with the Indiana Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) are expected to arrive at the scene to conduct a full investigation into the fatal workplace accident.
