Overland Park, KS—A young boy was seriously injured after sliding underneath a pickup truck, which he was holding onto as he rode on a skateboard. The accident occurred just before 8 p.m., on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 near West 91st Terrace and Robinson Street in Overland Park, as reported by NBC Action News.
Authorities reported that an 8-year-old boy was holding onto the side mirror of the pickup truck as a 16-year-old driver was driving north on Robinson. The young boy then suddenly slid underneath the truck and subsequently ran him over.
When rescue teams arrived at the scene they found the boy unconscious. A Life Flight helicopter was called to the scene to transport the young boy to an area hospital with critical injuries.
Neighbors say that it’s a common occurrence to see the boys doing this dangerous activity. They said it was sort of an “ongoing game” called “skitching.” Apparently skateboarders can use a car like a sling shot, sometimes reaching speeds up to 30 mph or more.
Police officials haven’t charged the driver at the time, but they said they would be questioning him.
Officials are currently withholding the identities of the driver and victim.
