Lakeland, FL (News)—A Polk County Deputy was traveling in full emergency mode, with his patrol lights and sirens on, when a Jeep turned into the officer’s path for unknown reasons, killing one woman. The officer and his K-9 partner were responding to a call on Highway 27 and Citrus Ridge Drive near Haines City around 10:20 pm., on May 15, 2010, when the deadly collision occurred, as reported by ABC Action News.
David Shapiro, seasoned in litigating Florida automobile accident cases, reports Deputy William Schob and his K-9 partner, Fanthom, were traveling northbound on Highway 27 with its lights and sirens fully activated. A southbound 2004 Jeep Cherokee reportedly tried to make an eastbound turn, when the SUV turned directly into the path of the oncoming patrol car. Consequently, the cruiser slammed into the passenger side of the Jeep, causing both vehicles to spin uncontrollably. The Jeep finally came to a stop in a ditch alongside the highway.
The collision killed a passenger in the Jeep, who was identified as Moni Kurian, 63. Kurian was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency crews. Kurian’s husband and driver of the SUV, Puleekunnil Joseph Kurian, 69, was transported to the Heart of Florida Hospital with minor injuries.
Deputy Schob was also rushed to Heart of Florida Hospital, where he was later transferred to Lakeland Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
The K-9, Fanthom, suffered a cut on his head, which required 10 stitches above his eye.
Accident investigators stated that everyone involved in the fatal wreck was wearing their seatbelts at the time. Fanthom was inside his backseat cage of the patrol car at the time. A full investigation is underway. It was not reported if the driver of the Jeep was cited for the deadly accident.
