Indianapolis, IN—A bus crash resulted in one fatality and injured 14 others, all of whom were members of a wedding party headed downtown to take photos before the ceremony. The wreck occurred on Saturday, June 5, 2010 and involved a shuttle bus and SUV. Though the bride and groom were among those injured, that didn’t stop them from marrying in the hospital later that afternoon, according to information provided by USA Today.
Reports indicated a shuttle bus was transporting members of a wedding party downtown when the wreck occurred. A sport utility vehicle collided with the bus for unknown reasons. The impact of the accident caused the bus to roll onto its side.
Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel responded to the scene to rush those injured to area hospitals. Unfortunately, 29-year-old James Douglas, suffered fatal injuries in the wreck.
Fourteen others were transported to two medical centers, including Methodist Hospital and Wishard Memorial Hospital, for treatment. Injuries sustained in the bus crash were not deemed to be life threatening. The driver of the SUV was not injured in the crash.
Security officers from Methodist Hospital apparently transported those treated at Wishard to Methodist where a wedding ceremony was held in a conference room at the hospital.
“It was a very emotional ceremony,” Clarian Health spokesperson Holly Vonderheit noted. Approximately 100 people attended the hospital ceremony where Lauren Magee and Tom Hanley said their vows.
One of the vehicles involved allegedly ran a red light just prior to the collision. Police are still in the process of trying to figure out who might have been at fault in the wreck.
