Minneapolis, MN—Cummins Power Generation and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have voluntarily recalled about 550 portable generations. The CPSC announced the recall on May 25, 2010, stating it is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
The recall was prompted after discovering that fuel can leak through the carburetor during normal use, which poses a fire hazard to consumers. Loncin Industries inc. Ltd, of China manufactured the portable generators.
At this time Cummins has received 25 reports of fuel leaking. None of the reports included injuries or property damage.
The CPSC stated “This recall involves Cummins Onan Portable Generators. “Cummins Onan” and the model number are printed on the front of the generator. The serial number is printed on the generator’s name plate. Only generators manufactured on or after June 2009 and before December 2009 are included in this recall.” The model numbers included in this recall are:
• P5350
• P5350c
• P5450e
• P5450ec
• P5550e
o With serial numbers starting with F09 through L09
The recalled portable generators were sold at authorized dealers nationwide from June 2009 through February 2010. The generators were sold for between $700 and $1,100.
Consumers are advised to stop using the product immediately and contact Cummins for a full refund, plus a $100 check. The firm has contacted all known users.
