Volusia County, FL—A rear-end collision involving an 18-wheeler and sport utility vehicle occurred along Interstate 95 on Wednesday, May 26, 2010. The violent motor vehicle accident caused one fatality and resulted in the hospitalization of another, according to information provided by the Orlando Sentinel.
Reports indicated a 1999 Chevrolet SUV and semi-truck were both traveling northbound on I-95 when the wreck occurred. Terry L. Eveleth, 50, was driving the tractor-trailer when it slammed into the back of the SUV for unknown reasons. The motor vehicle collision (MVC) occurred at approximately 4 a.m.
On impact, the SUV careened out of control and eventually flipped over. Eveleth managed to escape injury in the crash. On the other hand, the 60-year-old Edgewater man that was operating the SUV at the time was not so fortunate. He unfortunately succumbed to the severe injuries he sustained in the wreck. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel were dispatched to the scene to transport assist a female passenger who was riding in the SUV at the time. The unidentified woman was taken to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach to be treated. According to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers, she was listed in critical condition.
The accident scene was located south of State Road 44 (SR 44), in close proximity to New Smyrna Beach.
Authorities from the FHP are expected to conduct a full probe into the fatal 18-wheeler vs. SUV crash. No charges have been filed as of yet.
