The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash involving a semi-truck and van near Emporia, KS.
Emporia, KS—A two-vehicle collision along U.S. 50 resulted in the death of a 1-year-old child on Friday, March 26, 2010. The fatal crash occurred around 1:00 p.m., four miles east of Emporia, when the van he was riding in was struck by a semi-truck, as reported by the Kansas City Star.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, an eastbound van was struck by a semi-truck that was headed westbound on U.S. 50. The van was apparently making a left turn at an intersection when the two motor vehicles collided. The tractor trailer was reportedly passing another westbound semi on the right shoulder that had also stopped to make a left turn at the same intersection. The crash tragically killed Kolten Erwin, 1, who was riding in the van. Erwin was rushed by responding emergency rescue services to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., where he later died from his fatal injuries. Erwin’s mother, 25, was transported to Newman Regional Health in Emporia for treatment of her injuries. Kolten’s 2-year-old brother was also taken to Children’s Mercy for treatment. The mother and 2-year-old’s conditions are currently unknown. The truck drivers were not injured during the fatal crash.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is currently investigating the wreck. It was not reported if anyone was cited or charged for the wreck.
