Sioux Falls, SD—A seriously injured bus driver and several students were taken to the hospital after two school buses collided Wednesday afternoon, March 24, 2010. The two Canton Public School buses crashed around 3:30 p.m., about four miles south of Canton on County Highway 135, as reported by the Argus Leader.

Officials reported that a school bus transporting a small number of students had stopped at a drop-off location, when another bus rear-ended it. The second was so badly damaged that rescue crews had to extract the driver, who was then rushed to a Sioux Falls hospital for treatment. The students in the second bus sustained injuries that consisted of bumps, bruises and a couple bloody noses. They were taken to the Sanford Canton-Inwood Hospital as a precautionary measure. The students riding in the first bus appeared to be uninjured. The exact number of students inured and involved has not been reported. Police officials are withholding the bus driver’s identity. The cause of accident has yet to be determined at this time. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the two-bus wreck. It is unknown if any charges will be filed against the bus drivers.
