St. Petersburg, FL (News)—A Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) bus was involved in a motor vehicle collision (MVC) with an SUV on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, injuring seven people. The violent two-vehicle crash occurred at the junction of 22nd Avenue North and Interstate 275, under the overpass, according to information provided by ABCActionNews.com.
St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue officials allegedly stated a Suzuki Grand Vitara SUV was struck broadside by a PSTA bus at approximately 2 p.m., causing the SUV to rollover and subsequently trapping the driver inside the vehicle. The SUV was reportedly t-boned on the passenger side. Fire rescue crews allegedly had to extricate the trapped motorist from his SUV using the Jaws of Life. The St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue extrication team leader reported, “The top of the van had to be removed in order to ensure the patient’s safe removal.” The seven people injured in the bus-SUV collision, which included six bus passengers, were reportedly transported to area hospitals for treatment by responding medical professionals. Injuries were described as “minor” and accident investigations are underway.
According to statistics provided by the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) http://www.nhtsa.gov, as well as the Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS), 269 large trucks and buses were involved in fatal motor vehicle accidents in Florida during the year 2008. Thirty-two people were reported killed in crashes involving buses during that year.
