Bicyclist killed in fatal traffic crash, driver arrested.

Key Biscayne, FL—A bicyclist was involved in a hit-and-run traffic crash, leaving him fatally injured near the entrance of Key Biscayne. The tragic traffic accident occurred on the Rickenbacker Causeway on Sunday morning, January 17, 2010, according to reports by the Palm Beach Post.

Reports state that a silver Volkswagen Jetta, allegedly driven by Carlos Bertonatti, struck a cyclist from behind on the Bear Cut Bridge at approximately 8 a.m. The cyclist, whose identity was undisclosed by responding authorities, was left severely injured in a pool of his own blood, as the vehicle involved swiftly drove away, dragging the badly damaged bicycle along for the ride. The car allegedly sped into the center the Village of Key Biscayne until the bike became detached from the vehicle. After driving several blocks away, Key Biscayne police deputies detained the hit-and-run driver.

The bicyclists’ injuries sadly proved fatal although two cyclists reported at the scene, being a doctor and a firefighter, tried very hard to save the victim. According to complaints posted online by cyclists, rescue teams took almost twenty minutes to respond to the scene of the horrible traffic accident even though the Miami-Dade fire station was located nearby.

The eastbound lanes of Bear Cut Bridge were allegedly closed for the majority of the morning pending the Miami-Dade Police Departments’ probe of the hit-and-run traffic accident scene.
