Pinellas Park, FL—A fatal traffic accident involving a car and a teenage girl occurred this morning, Friday December 18, 2009, in Pinellas Park, according to information provided by TampaBay.com. The tragic incident allegedly occurred around 6:50 a.m. when Nora Hernandez-Huapilla, 17, and a friend began to cross 66th street from the southeast corner of the 70th Avenue and 66th Street intersection. The two students noticed their school bus across the street and began to run within the crosswalk even though oncoming drivers had a green light. A northbound Hyundai driver, David Hooper, who was driving in the middle lane on 66th Street when the two girls ran across, subsequently struck Hernandez-Huapilla. Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel transported Hernandez-Huapilla to Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg. Unfortunately, the Pinellas Park High School junior died not too long after arriving at the medical center.
It was reported that thousands of parents expressed great concerns about of overcrowding, seemingly dangerous bus stop locations, and the general disorganization within the public school bus system at the beginning of the year. The bus stop that these girls were attempting to cross over to was noted for being particularly hazardous. The Pinellas Park Police Department continues to investigate the fatal traffic incident.
